Installation FAQ

Q1: How is the office wired?

A1: View the Office Wiring page (click here).
You need "home runs".
a. Locate TeleCraft in a cool, protected place. You can hang it on a wall.
b. Run a 4-wire telephone cable from every telephone to TeleCraft. Note that the cable should be STRAIGHT and it needs a regular telephone plug (called RJ-11-C) on each end.
c. Connect the telephones to TeleCraft.
d. Connect the external lines to TeleCraft. The external lines should have telephone plugs.
e. Plug TeleCraft's power supply to a UPS and connect the UPS to a power outlet.
f. Enter Programming to tailor TeleCraft to your particular needs.

Q2: How can I create a Public Announce system with TeleCraft?

A2: There are 2 ways: (1) using the TC-6000 Operator Console and (2) using an external power amplifier. Note that you can use both ways simultaneously.

Using the TC-6000 system console (ver. 16.2 or later).

  • Connect the cable coming from TeleCraft to the TC-6000 console. This cable must have 4 wires and must be straight !!!
  • Connect the cord coming from the telephone to the TC-6000 console. It may be 2 or 4 wires, straight or reverse.
  • Connect the console's and the phone's power supplies.
  • From any phone, press 198 to use this PA system

Using an external power amplifier (ver. 16.2 or later).

  • Connect the power amplifier's input to pins 2 and 5 of PORT 07.
  • From any phone, press 199 to use the external power amplifier.

Q3: Why do I need to use a UPS.

A4: The UPS protects the KSU from power fails. Power fails can damage the KSU exactly the same way as they can damage any other computer.

Equipment FAQ

Q1: Can I use any telephone with TeleCraft?

A1: You can use any home-type telephone, cordless included. The telephone should be set to "tone", not "pulse". Note that you must use caller ID phones to display caller ID. Similarly, you must use telephones capable of displaying message waiting using FSK.

Q2: Can I connect the TC-6000 or the TC-5000 consoles to all of the ports?

A2: All ports, except port07 can be connected to either console.

Q3: Can I use a surge protector instead of a UPS?

A3: No. UPS's supply power upon main power failures. Surge protectors do not.

Operation FAQ

Q1: Calls disconnect on FLASH
When I press the FLASH key to transfer a call, TeleCraft disconnects the call. Why?

A1: Your telephone FLASH time is too long. You can compensate for it by changing the FLASH time in TeleCraft. TeleCraft's default FLASH time is 600ms. Increase it to 800ms and try to transfer a call. If you still disconnect calls, increase it to 1000ms but it is expected that 800ms should suffice. Do not increase the FLASH time unnecessarily!

Q2: Hunt groups
When the first telephone in the hunt group rings but nobody is there to answer, the call is routed to the back up. Shouldn't it go to the next telephone in the hunt group?

A2: No. Hunt groups are designed to find the first available person in the group. If that person does not answer, the call is routed to the back up.

Q3: Real Time Clock
Do I need to set the time-of-the-day every time there is a power failure?

A3: Your telephone system MUST be connected to a UPS thus you are protected from power failures unless the power failure duration is too long. In this case you'll need to re-set the time of day.

Q4: Voice Mail
Can I record Attendant messages for my house and separate messages for my home-based business?

A4: Yes. Each Attendant can have two "personalities" and support two businesses or a home and a home based business.

Q5: Voice Mail and Message Waiting
The Message Waiting light in my phone does not come up.

A5: Phones not purchased from GCT should be FSK compatible. Otherwise, the message waiting light will not function.

Q6: Call pick-up and FAX
When I press PICKUP ANY (or *P) to pick a call, I sometimes pick calls going to the FAX. Can I prevent it?

A6: Yes. In Programming, use Allow/Disallow Port Pick-up to disallow call pick up from the FAX port.

Q7: Automatic 9 insertion
How do I cancel Automatic 9 insertion?

A7: Lift the telephone receiver and press the FLASH key. Once you hear the internal dial tone, press *9. You will hear the OK tone followed by the internal dial tone. Hang up.

Q8: My telephone never rings
My telephone never rings and all calls are automatically diverted to my secretary.

A8: You have set your Call Forwarding to ON. You must cancel Call Forwarding.

Q9: Call restrictions
Can I restrict certain extensions from making outside calls?

Yes. Enter Programming and use Assign Dialing Restrictions to Port. Apply restriction level 4.

Q10: Blocking calls with the Automatic Attendants
The first Attendant serves my printing business and the second one serves my mailing business. Callers sometimes press extension numbers that they are not supposed to press and cross between the businesses. Is there a way to prevent it from happening?

A10: Yes. Each extension can allow calls coming from certain external lines while disallowing the others. See Assign Incoming CO List to Port in the Programming Manual.

Q11: Automatic Attendant default routing
When callers do not press any digit, the calls are automatically routed to the operator. Can I route only the second Attendant to my hunt group 4 instead?

A11: Yes. When callers do not make a selection, each Attendant routes the call to its own default destination. See Set Automatic Attendant Default Routing in the Programming Manual. Log on as the System Administrator and change the default routing.

Q12: Can a call ring several phones simultaneously?
I do not have an operator. Therefore, I'd like many phones in my office to ring simultaneously. Can it be done?

A12: Yes. There are 2 ways to do it:
1. When you need to ring 4 phones or less, set the hunt group's mode to BROADCAST (see the Programming Manual).
2. When you need to ring up to 8 phones, please read "How to Ring 8 phones" (press here).

Q13: TeleCraft with CENTREX
I press the FLASH key followed by the "#" key to generate a FLASH to my CENTREX line but it does not work.

A13: Once you press FLASH, make sure you wait till the end of the "FLASH" before pressing the "#" key. Also, ascertain that Flash Pass Through is enabled.

Q14: No response from TeleCraft
When I dial hunt group 1, TeleCraft does not do anything for several seconds and then I hear the busy signal. Why?

A14: There is no hunt group 1. All extension numbers in TeleCraft start with "1" and require 2 more digits. Thus when you press "1", TeleCraft waits for two more digits and since none arrive, you hear the busy signal after TeleCraft times out.
